The Road to Homologation

The story starts earlier than 1990. Mercedes-Benz entered the 190E into touring car racing in the mid-1980s with the original 190E 2.3-16, developed with help from Cosworth. As BMW's M3 and Audi's V8 quattro raised the performance ceiling in DTM through the late '80s, Mercedes needed something sharper. The answer came in two steps: the 190E 2.5-16 Evolution ("EVO I") in 1989, followed a year later by the car that would define the era — the 2.5-16 Evolution II.

DTM's homologation rules required manufacturers to build a minimum number of road-going examples matching the race car's specification before it could compete. Mercedes built exactly 502 EVO IIs for public sale — no more, no less — each one essentially a race car with license plates and air conditioning.

Engineering Beyond the Bodywork

The EVO II's widebody kit is the part everyone remembers, but it wasn't designed by a stylist — it was engineered by AMG and Mercedes' motorsport division specifically to solve aerodynamic problems at DTM speeds. The towering rear wing, adjustable front splitter, flared fenders, deep skirts, and reworked bumpers were all shaped and tested in the wind tunnel to reduce lift and manage cooling airflow, and every angle on the car served a functional purpose. Under the skin, the road car used a 2.5-liter Cosworth-developed inline-four making around 235 horsepower — but the DTM race version, running to the era's Group A/touring car regulations, would eventually produce well over 370 horsepower from the same basic architecture, revving past 9,000 rpm in later specification.

On track, the EVO II delivered. Driven by names like Klaus Ludwig, it helped Mercedes-Benz secure the 1992 DTM championship, going up wheel-to-wheel against BMW's M3 and Audi's V8 quattro in what's still considered one of the golden eras of touring car racing.

What makes the EVO II special decades later isn't just the racing pedigree — it's how honest the design is. Nothing on the body exists purely for looks.
